Nor'easters rally falls short; Wheaton takes 12-10 win

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Sophomore Billy McNamara (Mansfield, Mass.) scored five goals and dished out two assists to lead the Wheaton College men's lacrosse team to a 12-10 victory over the University of New England in a non-conference game Saturday afternoon at Barbara J. Hazard Field.

Leading 7-6 at the half, the Lyons outscored UNE 4-0 in the third period to take a 11-6 advantage. McNamara keyed the surge, notching three straight goals midway through the period.

The Nor'easters stormed back early in the final frame, closing within two (11-9) with three straight tallies in the opening 4:41.

Junior Duncan Smith (Centerport, N.Y.) stemmed the tide for Wheaton when he converted a pass from classmate Ben Cederberg (Duxbury, Mass.) at the 5:37 mark to give the Lyons a 12-9 lead.

The Nor'easters would score a man-up goal with just over three minutes remaining for the final score of 12-10.

Cederberg finished with two goals and three assists for the winners. Senior Warren Garceau (Guilford, Conn.) was strong on the draw, winning 15 of  25 face-offs.

Juniors Steve Smith (Walpole, Mass.) and Luke DiFiore (Gloucester, Mass.), sophomore Joe McCarthy (Billerica, Mass.) and first-year Tyler Thomas (Pleasantville, N.Y.) had two goals apiece for the Nor'easters. Sophomore Dylan Thomas (Pleasantville, N.Y.) was credited with four assists. Senior Mike Sagaert (Colorado Springs, Colo.) scooped up a game-high eight ground balls.

Senior goalie Schuyler Horn (New Hartford, Conn.) made seven saves for the win. His counterpart, UNE sophomore Nate Porter (Cohasset, Mass.), stopped 13 shots.

The Lyons (1-0) return to action Thursday afternoon when they head to Keene State College for a 4 p.m. game. UNE (1-1) head to Bates College on Tuesday for a 5 p.m. tilt.
