ORLANDO, Fla. -- Sophomore catcher
Ashley Gott (Winterport, Maine) blasted a three-run homer to pull the University of New England to within two of Saint Joseph College (Conn.) in the bottom of the sixth in game two, but the Nor'easters fell for the first time this season, 5-3. UNE pounded out 13 hits for a 6-1 win in game one of the doubleheader Wednesday at the Walt Disney Softball Diamondplex.
Junior
Amber Zablowsky (Rochester, Mass.) pitched the Nor'easters to a game one victory, giving up one earned run on five hits while fanning six.
Senior
Jenn Waldecker (Hooksett, N.H.) led the offenese with three hits and three RBI. Classmate
Julie Monteiro (Portsmouth, R.I.), Gott, and first-year
Erin Grover (Biddeford, Maine) each picked up two hits.
UNE scored one run in each of the first three innings to gain a 3-1 advantage. Big Blue tacked on two insurance runs in the fifth, led-off by the only hit of the day from senior
Angie Damon (Scarborough, Maine).
A pinch runner moved to second on a passed ball, and, after an out, scored on a Waldecker single. Two more singles followed to plate another run and put the Nor'easters up by four and remain unbeaten in five outings.
Game two went scoreless for the first five innings, before Saint Joseph put two on the board in the top of the sixth on a two-RBI single by Jacqueline Peck. With the bases loaded and two out, a throwing error allowed the all three runners to score and up the lead to 5-0.
Sophomore
Maegen Johnson (Standish, Maine) reached on an infield single with one out in the bottom of the inning, and moved to second on the second hit of the game from senior
Lauren Webb (Jericho, Vt.). Gott stepped in after a strikeout and cleared the bases with the second home run of her career.
Pitcher Kristin Parente shut UNE down the rest of the way, finishing with six strikeouts. Melanie Bush tallied three hits for the Blue Jays, while Parente helped her own cause with a pair of hits.
Saint Joseph (3-4) returns to New England Saturday and will visit Suffolk University in its Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opener.
The Nor'easters (5-1) wrap up their Florida trip Thursday (4 p.m.) against Farmingdale State College.
