Softball begins Florida swing with sweep of Mitchell

Senior captain Angie Damon picked up three hits each in both games against the Mariners

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Senior Angie Damon (Scarborough, Maine) went a combined 6-for-6 at the plate as the University of New England opened up its season with a 3-1, 2-1 sweep of Mitchell College Sunday at the Walt Disney Wide World of Sports Softball Diamondplex.

Sophomore Erin Lyons (Salem, N.H.) earned the victory in game one, allowing no earned runs and striking out eight Mariner batters. Damon led the offense with three hits, and sophomore Magaen Johnson (Standish, Maine) added a pair of hits.

The Nor'easters scored all of their runs in the second inning. After a lead-off single to left center by Damon, sophomore Ashley Gott (Winterport, Maine) reached on a bunt and first-year Erin Grover (Biddeford, Maine) walked to load the bases.

Sophomore Marie Mantelli (Thompson, Conn.) gave UNE the lead when she reached on a fielder's choice, plating Damon and moving Gott to third. Grover was forced at second on the play.

Another walk filled the bases, setting the stage for a sacrifice fly by senior Julie Monteiro (Portsmouth, R.I.) and an RBI single by Johnson to up the score to 3-0.

Mitchell scored a run in the fifth to provide the final margin.

Sophomore Kristina Torres (Groton, Conn.) fanned eight in a losing effort for the Mariners.

With two out in the first inning of game two, senior Lauren Webb (Jericho, Vt.) singled and stole second before scoring on a Damon single to put the Nor'easters on top.

UNE doubled its lead in the top of the sixth, started by a one-out double to the fence in left-center by Damon. Classmate Jenn Waldecker (Hooksett, N.H.) came on as a pinch runner, advanced to third on an out, and scored after a throwing error on a pick-off attempt.

Junior Amber Zablowsky (Rochester, Mass.) struck out four to get the win, surrendering a run in the bottom of the sixth.

Senior Sara Krolikowski (Bristol, Conn.) registered a pair of hits for the Mariners.

The Nor'easters (2-0) continue their Florida swing Tuesday afternoon against Daniel Webster College.

Mitchell (1-5) returns to New England for a doubleheader with Albertus Magnus College on March 24.
