Box Score
BIDDEFORD, Maine – Junior forward Dylan Cooper (Colorado Springs, Colo.) knocked in a rebound with 1:13 remaining to help the Tufts University Jumbos rally for a 4-2 victory over the University of New England Nor'easters in a men's ice hockey game Friday evening at Biddeford Arena.
After streaking up the left side, Cooper collected a rebound of his own shot and beat UNE first-year goaltender Dallas Ungurian (Edmonton, Alberta) for his eighth goal and first game-winner of the season. First-year forward Dylan Plimmer (Phoenix, Ariz.) would add an empty-net goal for the Jumbos with six seconds to play.
Trailing 2-1 after two periods, Tufts knotted the score at 10:47 of the third when senior Cory Korchin (Fountain Valley, Calif.) rifled a wrist shot just inside the left post to convert a Tufts' 3-on-2 opportunity.
The Jumbos' three-goal output in the third made a winner out of goaltender Scott Barchard (Reading, Mass.), who was spectacular all evening. The sophomore netminder made a total of 60 saves, including 25 in the middle period.
After a scoreless first frame, UNE got on the scoreboard at 3:34 of the second on a rebound goal by first-year forward Tyler Fleurent (Biddeford, Maine).
Tufts responded a little more than five minutes later after Barchard made a sensational stop on a short-handed bid by UNE first-year John Melancon (Lyman, Maine). The Jumbos raced out of their defensive end and Plimmer fed junior Tom Derosa (Charlestown, Mass.), who recorded his team-best fifth power-play goal.
The Nor'easters would grab the lead back with 2:33 left in the second when sophomore Justin Miner (Stratham, Mass.) converted a centering pass from first-year Scott McManaman (Amherst, Nova Scotia).
Ungurian made 38 saves for UNE, which lost despite holding a 62-42 advantage in shots on goal.
Tufts (10-8-3, 6-7-3 NESCAC) returns to the ice tomorrow with a 4 p.m. game at the University of Southern Maine in Gorham.
The Nor'easters (2-19, 1-15 ECAC) host Connecticut College at the Biddeford Arena. The puck will drop at 3 p.m.
