BRISTOL, R.I. -- The Roger Williams University women's swimming team won eight of the first 11 swimming events to cruise to a score of 543 and its sixth consecutive The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Invitational title, topping the six-team field Friday and Saturday at the RWU Aquatics Center. The University of New England placed second with a total of 413.

It marked the fifth straight year that UNE finished in the runner-up position. Western New England College came in third at 262, while Colby-Sawyer College (194.5), Regis College (187), and Gordon College (178.5) rounded out the competing teams.

Junior Lizzie Wareham (Osterville, Mass.) claimed two events for the Nor'easters, and came up just 0.02 short of notching a third in the 100-yard butterfly (to RWU's Melly Marrington). Wareham (25.75) edged out RWU's Kristen Grandonico in the 50-yard freestyle by 0.45, and beat out Gordon's Christina Clark by 0.63 in the 100 free.

In the 1,650-yard freestyle, Big Blue junior Jessica Sweeney (Hampton, N.H.) earned a comfortable win with a time of 19:38.68. Classmate Sara Shea (Peabody, Mass.) posted a time of 2:40.65 in the 200-yard breaststroke to get another victory for UNE.

Sweeney, Shea, and first-year Alex Gabriels (East Greenbush, N.Y.) each took a second-place showing in individual races, and the Nor'easters finished as the runner-up in all four relay events.

RWU's Heather Beardsworth matched Wareham's meet-best two wins to pace the Hawks.

UNE travels to Spingfield, Mass. next Saturday to swim against WNEC (1 p.m.).
