No. 5 Williams skates to 6-0 victory over Nor'easters

Box Score

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The nationally-ranked Williams College men's ice hockey team received a pair of goals from senior Connor Olvany (Wilmette, Ill.) on its way to a 6-0 shutout of the University of New England in an ECAC East/NESCAC crossover game played Friday evening at Biddeford Arena.

The fifth-ranked Ephs (5-0-1, 3-0-0)) broke the game open with three goals in a span of 2:18 in the first period. Olvany snapped a scoreless tie at the 13:19 mark when he went top-shelf with a wrist shot in a man-down situation. Senior Ben Contini (Toronto, Ontario) made the score 2-0 at 14:40 on a nifty one-time slapper off a feed from junior Justin Troiani (Woodbridge, Ontario). Williams would strike again less than a minute later on the first goal of the season by senior Brian Malchoff (Avon, Conn.).

Olvany notched the lone goal of the second frame, finding the cage during a power-play opportunity midway thru the frame to give Williams a 4-0 advantage.

The visitors would tack on a pair of scores in the third when first-year Bryden McGhee (Calgary, Alberta) and Troiani scored less than a minute apart.

First-year goaltender Ryan Purdy (La Jolla, Calif.) kept his unblemished record intact, denying all 16 shots on goal he faced.

Senior Mike Roper (New Glasgow, Nova Scotia) made 40 saves on 46 shots for the Nor'easters (1-4, 0-3).

Both teams return to the ice tomorrow. Williams plays at the University of Southern Maine, while UNE hosts Middlebury College. Both contests are scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
