Box Score
GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine men's ice hockey team scored a goal in each period, and first-year goaltender Braely Torris (Eckville, Alberta) turned aside 25 shots as the Huskies earned a 3-0 shutout over the University of New England in ECAC East action Saturday afternoon at the USM Ice Arena.
USM (4-4-1, 2-3 ECAC East) got all the scoring it would need at 7:26 of the first when senior Zach Joy (Dover, N.H.) caged his fifth tally of the season to give the hosts a 1-0 advantage.
The Huskies would double their lead 1:53 into the second when sophomore Sean Travis (Scituate, Mass.) set-up classmate Dustin Rider (Farmington, Conn.).
Southern Maine added some padding to its lead midway thru the final frame on an unassisted short-handed goal by senior Jon Rutt (Scarborough, Maine).
Torris came up with 10 stops in the third period to preserve his second collegiate shutout.
Senior
Mike Roper (New Glasgow, Nova Scotia) stopped 34 of 37 shots for the Nor'easters (1-6, 0-5).
Neither team was able to convert any power-play opportunities. USM was 0 for 5 while Big Blue came up empty on its three chances.
Both teams have a few weeks off before returning to the ice. UNE plays at the Plymouth State University Tournament on Dec. 30-31, and the Huskies face the US U-18 in an exhibition game on New Year's Day.
