Purple Knights blank Nor'easters to improve to 2-0

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. -- Senior Reave MacKinnon (Winnepeg, Manitoba) had a goal and two assists to power the St. Michael's College men's ice hockey team to a 5-0 shutout of the University of New England in an ECAC East game played Saturday afternoon at Cairns Arena.

The victory improves the Purple Knights' record to 2-0, while the Nor'easters slip to 0-2.

St. Mike's scored a pair of power-play goals in the first period. Sophomore Dan Evarts (Hinesburg, Vt.) got the hosts on the scoreboard midway thru the frame, then junior Brady Earle (Columbia, Md.) tallied with a man advantage with 23 seconds remaining. MacKinnon set-up both of goals.

The Purple Knights extended their advantage to 3-0 at 6:16 of the second when sophomore Michael Jangro (Reading, Mass.) found the cage.

St. Michael's put the game out of the reach midway thru the third period, scoring twice in span of 2:15. MacKinnon got the game's fourth tally, then sophomore Josh Geary (Wellesley, Mass.) completed the scoring.

Senior goaltender Brendan Rimmer (Newbury, Mass.) had 16 saves -- 14 coming in the final two periods -- to register the shutout.

UNE senior Mike Roper (New Glasgow, Nova Scotia) stopped 38 of the 43 shots he faced.

The Nor'easters are idle until after Thanksgiving when they play Nov. 27-28 at the PAL Stovepipe Tournament hosted by Southern New Hampshire University. Big Blue will take on the hosts Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

St. Mike's entertains Assumption College Tuesday at 7:35 p.m.
