First-half spurt sends Eagles to victory over UNE

Junior Marcus Winn hit three treys and finished with 15 points to pace the UNE offense

CHICOPEE, Mass. -- St. Joseph's College of Long Island scored 15 consecutive points midway through the first half to take control on its way to a 101-66 victory over the University of New England in an opening-round game of the Blazer Men's Basketball Tip-Off Tournament hosted by Elms College.

The Eagles (2-0) advance to play Elms, a 60-59 winner over Husson University in the day's first contest. Husson and UNE (0-3) will tip-off at 2 p.m. tomorrow in the consolation game.

Junior Olivier Laurent (Amityville, N.Y.) led five Eagle players in double figures with a game-high 20 points. Sophomore Barry Ingram, Jr. (Bayshore, N.Y.) had 17 points and junior Trey Black (Bayport, N.Y.) chipped in 16 on 7-for-10 shooting. Junior Steve Velazquez (Happauge, N.Y.) nailed four 3-pointers and finished with 14 points.

For UNE, junior guard Marcus Winn (Austin, Texas) tossed in a team-high 15 points, including three treys. First-year Bobby Belanger (Clinton, Maine) added seven points and seven rebounds, while sophomore #J.D. Winn# (Austin, Texas) scored seven.

Trailing 17-14 with seven minutes gone by, the Eagles exploded for 15 unanswered points -- six on layups by Black -- to take a 29-17 lead. St. Joseph's went on to take a 43-26 lead into intermission.

The Eagles scored 10 of the first 11 points of the final frame to forge a 53-27 cushion and cruised the rest of the way.

St. Joe's forced 30 UNE turnovers and shot 51.3 percent (39 of 76) from the floor. The Nor'easters held a 45-38 rebounding edge.
