BRISTOL, R.I. -- Junior Noelle Marston (Kingston, Mass.) scored with 2:36 elapsed in overtime to give top-seeded Roger Williams University a 2-1 sudden-victory win over fourth-seeded University of New England in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship semifinal-round game played Tuesday afternoon at Bayside Field.
The win pushes the top-seeded Hawks (16-4) into Saturday's final where they will play the winner of No. 2 Endicott College and No. 3 Western New England College. UNE stands at 12-7 and awaits word on a possible ECAC New England Championship bid.
Marston's fourth game-winning goal came when she took a pass from junior Katie Fusaro (Hopkinton, Mass.) and lifted a high shot into the left corner of the goal. Marston had eluded several UNE defenders after receiving Fusaro's feed.
After a scoreless first half, the host Hawks got on the scoreboard in the 56th minute on a set piece. Junior Alex Maher (Hopewell, N.J.) served a free kick towards Fusaro, who deflected the ball off her body to junior Laurin Pendleton (Southwick, Mass.). The TCCC Player of the Year collected the deflection and drilled a shot into the left corner to give Roger Williams a 1-0 advantage.
Big Blue responded four minutes later when junior
Katie Caron (Winslow, Maine) placed a service over the Hawks' defense. First-year
Morgan Jensen (New Hartford, Mass.) out-ran the defense, took a few touches, a pushed a shot by RWU keeper Kelsey McGee (Kings Park, N.Y.). McGee got a piece of Jensen's shot, but the ball trickled over the goal line before a Hawk defender could clear it.
For the game, Roger Williams led in both shots (19-8) and corner kicks (7-2). McGee stopped three shots to record her 16th victory. Junior
Jess Woodworth (Concord, N.H.) had 10 saves for the Nor'easters.
The Hawks will be making their second appearance in the TCCC title game in three seasons, while UNE is looking for its third consecutive bid to the ECAC Championship.
ECAC selections are scheduled for release Monday (Nov. 8) afternoon.
