Colby-Sawyer moves to 5-1 in TCCC with win over UNE

Box Score

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Colby-Sawyer College got a 17th-minute score from senior Doug McLaughlin (Derry, N.H.) and held on in the second half to defeat the University of New England, 1-0, in The Commonwealth Coast Conference men's soccer action Tuesday evening at Barbara J. Hazard Field.

The win ups the Chargers record to 6-5 on the season, 5-1 in conference matches. With their third consecutive setback, the Nor'easters fall to 3-5-3 (1-4-2 TCCC).

The lone goal of the contest came as Colby-Sawyer applied pressure in the UNE end. After collecting a short clear, sophomore Tyler Stotz (Amesbury, Mass.) sent a gentle chip up over the defensive line to where McLaughlin ran onto it, took one touch to get around the keeper, and slipped it home.

Big Blue had its chances after intermission -- finishing with a 9-3 edge in shots during the second frame -- but could not find the equalizer.

Junior goalkeeper Will Berry (Berlin, Vt.) recorded five saves to post his sixth shutout of the year for the Chargers, who host Western New England College Saturday (3 p.m.).

For the Nor'easters, who travel to Anna Maria College the same day (2 p.m.), senior Jon Planer (Yarmouth, Maine) made six stops.
