Nor'easters cruise to TCCC tourney win over Salve Regina

Box Score

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Junior Alice Read (Auburn, Maine) scored a pair of goals to help the fourth-seeded University of New England to a 4-1 victory over fifth-seeded Salve Regina University in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Women's Soccer Championship quarterfinal round action Saturday afternoon at Barbara J. Hazard Field.

The Nor'easters (12-6) move on to face the tournament's top seed, Roger Williams University (a 2-0 winner over #8 Gordon College), in Bristol, R.I. Tuesday (1 p.m.). The Hawks defeated Big Blue in their meeting during the regular season, 3-1.

Play went back-and-forth early on, as the initial 20 shots were split evenly between the two squads. After several near misses for UNE and a few diving saves from Salve starting goalie Jessica Lane (Marshfield, Mass.), junior Katie Caron (Winslow, Maine) fired a low shot inside the left post to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

The Nor'easters ended the period with an 18-11 edge in shots.

UNE kept the pressure on early in the second half, tacking another on the board in the 52nd minute when Caron collected a short clear and lofted a pass up over the defensive back line. Read got to the ball first and flicked it into the net over the keeper rushing out.

Read struck again at the 68:21 mark, poking home a rebound following three quick shots in succession, and Big Blue led, 3-0.

The Seahawks broke through 1:06 later, when sophomore Kaitlyn Birrell (Hope, R.I.) fed first-year Erin McCullough (Ludlow, Mass.) on the left side and the rookie tucked a hard shot inside the right post.

Big Blue junior back Jesalyn Dvorak (Windsor, Conn.) took a pass from senior Kristin Meza (San Diego, Calif.) in the 82nd minute and put in her second goal of the season to complete the scoring.

For the match, UNE held a 37-17 advantage in shot attempts (21-3 on goal).

Junior Jess Woodworth (Concord, N.H.) only needed to make a pair of stops for the Nor'easters, who came out victorious against the Seahawks for the fourth consecutive game between the teams.

Lane added a few more nice saves after halftime to finish with 14 before leaving the field in the 69th minute with an injury. First-year Emily DaSilva (Danbury, Conn.) turned away one shot in the final 21:39. Salve Regina wraps up the season with an overall record of 10-9.
