Nor'easters cruise to Senior Night victory over Colby

Kristen Edwards recorded a match-best 11 kills in her final regular-season home match

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- After pulling out a 25-23 victory in the first set, the University of New England Nor'easters rolled to 25-12 and 25-9 wins in the final two frames for a 3-0 sweep of Colby College in non-conference women's volleyball action on Senior Night at the Campus Center.

UNE senior Kristen Edwards (Laconia, N.H.) led all players with 11 kills in her final regular-season home match. First-year Angie Brunette (North Andover, Mass.) was also strong up front, contributing eight kills and four total blocks. Senior Meghan Flynn (Stoneham, Mass.) and sophomore Paige Curran (Chelmsford, Mass.) each added five kills. First-year Nicole Kalinowski (Tucson, Ariz.) won seven points with three kills and four aces.

The Nor'easters also received a strong performance from first-year Maria Kuehl (Middleton, N.H.), who finished with 24 assists and was 20-for-20 on service attempts. Defensively, Kuehl and classmate Kirsta Adie (Tyngsboro, Mass.) led the way with eight digs apiece.

Colby received seven kills from junior Heather Arvidson (Andover, Mass.). First-year setter Kate Pleasants (Virginia Beach, Va.) handed out 13 assists, while senior Clare Reich (Piedmont, Calif.) and junior Caitlin Burchill (Walpole, Mass.) had nine and eight digs, respectively.

The victory was the Nor'easters' second in a row over Colby after dropping the previous 11 meetings with the Mules. UNE (15-9) returns to the court Saturday with a tri-match at Newbury College. Big Blue takes on Bay Path College at 1 p.m. and the host Nighthawks at 3 p.m.

Colby (6-14) is slated to host Regis College that same afternoon (1 p.m.).
