NEWTON, Mass. -- Down two sets, the University of New England rallied for a thrilling 3-2 non-conference win over host Lasell College Saturday afternoon in the final tilt of a non-conference women's volleyball tri-match.
The Nor'easters found themselves down 2-0 after the Lasers came back from signficant deficits in each of the first two sets. Lasell trailed 19-15 in the first and 13-9 in the second before rallying for wins in both frames.
UNE had the hosts set-point (24-20) in the third before Lasell fought back yet again. Big Blue eventually won the set, 28-26, to turn the momentum of the match.
Big Blue nearly squandered another big lead (24-18) in the fourth, but held tough to grab a 26-24 decision to force a fifth and deciding frame.
With the rubber set tied at eight, the Nor'easters won five straight points on the serve of sophomore
Lindsey Cashell (Merrimack, N.H.) to take control. The Nor'easters earned a 15-10 win in the finale to cap the epic comeback.
UNE sophomore
Paige Curran (Chelmsford, Mass.) played the match of her career, drilling a personal-best 18 kills with just one attack error (.486 percentage). She also added a pair of block assists to finish with 19 points won.
Senior
Kristen Edwards (Laconia, N.H.) posted a double-double with 12 kills and a career-high 11 digs, while first-year
Nicole Kalinowski (Tucson, Ariz.) and
Angie Brunette (North Andover, Mass.) added nine kills apiece. Kalinowksi played a strong all-around match, adding 16 digs, five block assists and three aces.
First-year setter
Maria Kuehl (Middleton, N.H.) played a large role in the attack, establishing a career high with 51 assists to go with 14 digs and three aces.
In the back row, first-year libero
Kirsta Adie (Tyngsboro, Mass.) had 22 digs and sophomore
Jackie Stone (Saginaw, Mich.) 13.
Danielle Drapeau had 16 kills and four service aces to lead the way for Lasell (7-9).
