SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Senior forward Heather Mortell (Webster, Mass.) scored an unassisted goal with 7:48 remaining to give Western New England College a 2-1 The Commonwealth Coast Conference victory over the University of New England in women's soccer action Saturday afternoon at Suprenant Field.

Winners of four straight, the Golden Bears up their record to 7-4 overall and 5-1 in conference matches. The Nor'easters fall to 7-3, and sit at 4-2 in TCCC play.

Mortell's game-winner came just 2:41 after UNE junior Katie Caron (Winslow, Maine) converted a pass from first-year Morgan Jensen (Hew Hartford, Conn.) for a goal, which had tied things at 1-1.

The Nor'easters out-shot their opponents, 7-4, in the second half, but could not find the equalizer before time expired.

WNEC got on the board in the 15th minute when first-year Nina Vital (Ludlow, Mass.) put the hosts in front.

First-year goalie Kayla Prout (Holyoke, Mass.) made two saves for the Golden Bears, while UNE junior Jess Woodworth (Concord, N.H.) was credited with five stops.

Both squads return to action Tuesday, as WNEC entertains Eastern Nazarene College (3:30 p.m.) and the Nor'easters take on Colby-Sawyer College. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
