CASTINE, Maine -- The University of New England women's soccer team opened its season by blanking Maine Maritime Academy, 5-0, in a non-conference road game Saturday afternoon at Ritchie Field.
Senior midfielder
Ali Trafton (Manchester, Maine) scored a pair of first-half goals to pace the Nor'easters' scoring. Sophomore forwards
Maggie Mahoney (Newburyport, Mass.) and
Sarah Richardson (Rochester, N.H.) each found of the back of the net, while first-year midfielder
Lauren Blaisdell (Scarborough, Maine) tallied her first collegiate goal.
Senior
Leigh Engel (Richmondville, N.Y.) and sophomore
Jess Woodworth (Concord, N.H.) faced just one Maine Maritime shot. Engel played the opening 58:42 between the posts before being relieved by Woodworth.
The Nor'easters held a commanding 42-1 advantage in shots.
Trafton converted a feed from first-year midfielder
Karina Scavo (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) to give UNE a 1-0 lead in the third minute. She would later push the advantage to 2-0 by collecting a pass from Mahoney and pushing a shot to the left of the MMA keeper.
Blaisdell completed the first-half scoring in the 41st minute on a goal assisted by first-year midfielder
Monica Meza (San Diego, Calif.).
Mahoney gave UNE a 4-0 cushion in the 75 minute, then sophomore forward
Katie Caron (Winslow, Maine) set-up Richardon to wrap up the scoring in the 81st minute.
The Nor'easters (1-0) head to Gorham on Wednesday (Sept. 9) to take on the University of Southern Maine at 4 p.m.
Maine Maritime travels to UMaine Farmington tomorrow for a 2 p.m. match.
