GORHAM, Maine -- The University of New England opened its season with a 3-0 sweep of the University of Southern Maine in non-conference women's volleyball action Saturday afternoon at Hill Gymnasium. The set scores were 25-10, 25-15, and 25-10.
The Nor'easters (1-0) topped the Huskies (0-2) for the third consecutive time and fifth in the last six meetings between the two teams.
First-year middle hitter
Paige Curran (Chelmsford, Mass.) led the UNE attack with 12 kills and four blocks. Senior outside hitter
Claire Varner (Breckenridge, Mich.) contributed 10 kills, while totaling 11 digs and a team-high six aces. Senior setter
Ellen Choinski (Saunderstown, R.I.) had 24 assists for the match.
Southern Maine received five kills from senior outside hitter Shannon Shuttle (New Ipswich, N.H.), who also recorded a team-high 11 digs.
First-year outside hitter
Jackie Stone (Saginaw, Mich.) matched Varner's 11 digs for the Nor'easters, who travel to the Roger Williams Invitational next Saturday (Sept. 12) for three matches. UNE faces NYU-Polytechnic at 11 a.m. in its first match of the day.
The Huskies take to the court again Tuesday when they visit Maine Maritime Academy.
