Maine Maritime rallies before halftime; holds off UNE late

CASTINE, Maine -- Sophomore forward Nate Tipton (West Chester, Penn.) scored a pair of first-half goals and Maine Maritime Academy withstood a 21-shot second half barrage to defeat the University of New England, 2-1, in non-conference men's soccer action Saturday afternoon.

The contest was the first of the season for the Mariners, who snapped a two-game losing streak to the Nor'easters with the win. UNE lost for the first time to even its record at 1-1.

Sophomore forward Kiel Hiller (Galloway, N.J.) put the Nor'easters on the board first, tallying an unassisted goal in the 11th minute.

Tipton responded for the Mariners seven minutes later to tie things up, then collected a pass from sophomore midfielder Nick El-Hajj (Hampden, Maine) in the 35th minute and scored to give the hosts a 2-1 lead.

Maine Maritime managed to hold on down the stretch, despite getting out-shot 21-4 and surrendering six corner kicks in the second frame. For the game, UNE held a 33-12 advantage in shots.

Junior goalkeeper Jeff Butland (Cumberland, Maine) stepped up to make nine saves for the Mariners, who visit UMaine Farmington Sunday.

For UNE, which will open The Commonwealth Coast Conference play next Saturday (Sept. 12) against Eastern Nazarene College, junior goalie Jon Planer (Yarmouth, Maine) made five saves.
