NEWPORT, R.I. – Sophomore Sean McAllister (North Arlington, N.J.) scored his first two goals of the season to lead the Salve Regina University men's soccer team to a 4-0 win over University of New England in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) action Wednesday afternoon at Reynolds Field.
Junior co-captain Ken Johnson (Colonia, N.J.) dished out a pair of assists for the Seahawks, who snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 5-4 (3-2 TCCC). The loss snaps the Nor'easters (7-2, 4-1 TCCC) six-game win streak and is their first conference loss of the season. Salve improved to 8-1 in its last eight meetings between the two teams.
McAllister got the Seahawks on the board just 1:46 into the match when he cut back to his left and fired a shot from the right side of the box that found its way inside the left corner of the net. Sophomore Tony Lania (Concord, Mass.) gave Salve Regina a 2-0 lead when he took a feed from Johnson in the top left corner of the box and scored into the right corner at 10:28. The goal was Lania's third of the season.
Junior Trevor Audet (Duxbury, Vt.) stretched the lead to 3-0 just moments after he entered the contest in the first half. Johnson rifled a shot that was stopped by UNE junior keeper Jon Planer (Yarmouth, Maine.), but Audet put the rebound into an empty net for his first of the season at 20:17. McAllister closed the scoring when he split the defense and blasted a shot that hit the bottom of the crossbar and bounced in at 57:03. Freshman Pat Vierengel (Armonk, N.Y.) was credited with the assist on McAllister's goal.
Senior goalkeeper Kurt Ginthwain (Tolland, Conn.) made four saves en route to his third shutout of the season. Planer finished the contest with five saves for UNE, which was outshot 20-9 on the afternoon.
The Nor'easters will look to regain their winning form Saturday when they host Anna Maria College at 3:30 p.m.
