Balanced Bowdoin attack keys 3-0 sweep of UNE

Bowdoin rallied from a 24-20 deficit in the first set on its way to a 3-0 sweep of UNE

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The Bowdoin College volleyball team received six or more kills from five different players en route to a 3-0 (26-24, 25-21, 25-14) sweep of the University of New England in a non-conference match Tuesday evening at the Campus Center.

First-years Victoria Edelman (New York, N.Y.) and Melissa Haskell (Medfield, Mass.) had 11 and 10 kills, respectively, to pace the Polar Bears. Senior Gillian Page (Mercer Island, Wash.) chipped in nine, while sophomore Kristin Hanczor (Redding, Conn.) added seven and junior Stephanie Drumwright (San Francisco, Calif.) six.

Edelman, Hanczor and Drumwright were each credited with three total blocks for Bowdoin.

Starting first-year setter Stephanie Bond (Lexington, Mass.) handed out 14 assists in the first set. Senior Jenna Diggs (La Jolla, Calif.) came off the bench to register 23 over the final two.

Defensively, Bowdoin was paced by junior libero Jillian Berkman (Nashville, Tenn.), who recorded a match-high 15 digs. She was also 23-for-25 on serves received.

The Nor'easters were led by senior Claire Varner (Brenckenridge, Mich.), who finished with seven kills and 11 digs. First-year Lindsey Cashell (Merrimack, N.H.) totaled five kills. Senior Ellen Choinski (Saunderstown, R.I.) and junior Angie Gust (Manitowoc, Wisc.) combined for 22 digs.

Trailing 24-20 in set number one, the Polar Bears scored three consecutive points to close within one (24-23). Drumwright and Edelman then teamed up for consecutive blocks before Page recorded a kill to close out the set and give Bowdoin a 1-0 advantage. UNE would hit just .048 over the final two sets.

The Polar Bears (7-5) snapped a three-match losing streak and will host the Maine Mid-Coast Classic this Friday and Saturday.

UNE (4-7) plays a The Commonwealth Coast Conference tri-match versus Eastern Nazarene College and host Endicott College on Saturday.
