Senior Claire Varner racked up 15 kills to pace UNE in a sweep of St. Joe's

STANDISH, Maine -- Senior outside hitter Claire Varner (Breckenridge, Mich.) posted a season-high 15 kills to power the University of New England to a sweep of St. Joseph's College of Maine in non-conference volleyball play Thursday evening at the Harold Alfond Center. The Nor'easters downed the Monks by set scores of 25-10, 25-14, 25-22.

Varner recorded a hitting percentage of .353 with just three errors in 35 attempts. She also added nine digs.

Senior setter Ellen Choinski (Saunderstown, R.I.) registered a double-double with 28 assists and 12 digs. First-year middle hitter Paige Curran (Chelmsford, Mass.) contributed eight kills and a pair of solo blocks, while first-year outside hitter Jackie Stone (Saginaw, Mich.) and junior libero Angie Gust (Mantiwoc, Wisc.) dug out 30 balls collectively.

Junior Meghan Flynn (Stoneham, Mass.) added six kills and four total blocks for UNE (2-3), which halted a three-game losing streak.

First-year Megan Hawkes (Pownal, Maine) had seven kills and seven blocks to lead the Monks (8-4).

The Nor'easters open their home and The Commonwealth Coast Conference schedules Saturday when they host Regis College (11 a.m.) and Colby-Sawyer College (3 p.m.) for a tri-match at the Campus Center.
