Maggie Mahoney gave the Nor'easters their first-ever victory over Colby with a last-minute tally
Box Score
BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Sophomore forward
Maggie Mahoney (Newburyport, Mass.) scored with 46 seconds remaining to give the University of New England a thrilling 2-1 victory over Colby College in non-conference women's soccer action Tuesday evening.
The win was the Nor'easters' first-ever over Colby. UNE had dropped its previous 11 meetings with the Mules.
With the score tied at 1-all and overtime looming, senior midfielder
Ali Trafton (Manchester, Maine) found Mahoney with a low pass from the right corner that Mahoney collected and pushed past a sprawling Colby goalkeeper to provide the winning margin.
The Mules had knotted the match in the 88th minute when senior midfielder Meg Edwards (East Brunswick, N.J.) found the right side of the net on a shot from the left portion of the box. First-year back Katherine McCarrick (Wellesley, Mass.) was credited with an assist on the play.
After a scoreless first half, the hosts got on the scoreboard when sophomore forward
Katie Caron (Winslow, Maine) lobbed a high shot from 30 yards out that tipped off the Colby keeper's hands and trickled across the goal line.
Senior
Leigh Engel (Richmondville, N.Y.) made two saves in a winning effort for the Nor'easters, who are off to a 4-0 start for the first time since 1994 when they reeled off 19 consecutive victories to open the campaign.
For Colby (0-1-1,) junior Loni Pisani (Kanata, Canada) turned aside five UNE shots on goal.
Each team returns to the pitch Saturday. The Nor'easters play a road game at Gordon College (noon), while the Mules head to Wesleyan University for an 11 a.m. start.
