Nor'easters blow past Eastern Nazarene in TCCC opener

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Four different players found the back of the net as the University of New England defeated Eastern Nazarene College, 4-0, in The Commonwealth Coast Conference women's soccer action Saturday afternoon in the rain.

The Nor'easters improve to 3-0 overall on the season with the win. The Lions dropped their second straight contest, falling to 1-5 overall. This was the first conference game for both teams.

First-year Karina Scavo (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, converting off a Lions turnover.

UNE added a goal at the 34:55 mark, when sophomore Maggie Mahoney (Newburyport, Mass.) gathered a cross from first-year Monica Meza (San Diego, Calif.) and slipped one past the goalie. Monica Meza found her sister, Kristin Meza (San Diego, Calif.) 25 seconds later to give the hosts a three-goal advantage at intermission.

Sophomore Sarah Richardson (Rochester, N.H.) completed the scoring in the 74th minute, as Monica Meza tallied her third assist of the game on the play.

Sophomore starting goalie Jess Woodworth (Concord, N.H.) and senior Leigh Engel (Richmondville, N.Y.) split time in net for the Nor'easters, each recording a pair of saves.

The Nor'easters out-shot the Lions by a margin of 31-4 for the game.

For Eastern Nazarene, which faces Wheelock College on Thursday, first-year Bridget Hislop (Burley, Wash.) made 13 saves.

UNE takes to the field again Tuesday when it hosts Colby College at 7 p.m.
