BRISTOL, R.I. -- The University of New England women's volleyball team came up on the wrong side of three decisions at the Roger Williams Invitational Saturday, falling to Polytechnic University (3-1), Rivier College (3-0), and Roger Williams University (3-1).

In the first match of the day, the Nor'easters won the opening set against Polytechnic, 25-15. But the Fighting Blue Jays (4-4) rebounded to take the next three sets by scores of 25-19, 25-22, and 25-19. First-year Paige Curran (Chelmsford, Mass.) led the UNE attack with 11 kills and three blocks, and junior Kristen Edwards (Laconia, N.H.) added 10 kills. Senior Ellen Choinski (Saunderstown, R.I.) tallied 29 assists, while junior Angie Gust (Manitowoc, Wisc.) and first-year Jackie Stone (Saginaw, Mich.) recorded 26 and 23 digs, respectively.

Against Rivier (3-4), the set scores were 25-17, 25-20, and 25-22 in favor of the Raiders.

In UNE's final match of the day, the Nor'easters came out strong to take the first set, 25-20. However, Roger Williams (5-4) stormed back to win three sets in-a-row by the scores of 25-18, 25-18, and 25-16. Curran tallied 10 kills and three blocks in the contest, while senior Claire Varner (Breckenridge, Mich.) and first-year Lindsey Cashell (Merrimack, N.H.) added 10 kills apiece. Choinski fueled the offense with 38 assists.

For the day, Stone successfully received nearly 90 percent (42 of 47) of the serves that came her direction.

Most Valuable Player Jill Hurd and Kristina Dolan represented the tournament champion Hawks on the All-Tournament Team, while tournament runner-up Rivier placed Kenna Finlayson and Emileigh Cenedella on the team. Corey Loupee of Polytechnic garnered recognition on the team, as did Varner for UNE.

The Nor'easters (1-3) are off until Thursday when they travel to Saint Joseph's College for a non-conference match beginning at 6 p.m.
