GORHAM, Maine  --  Junior Jason Marks (East Lyme, Conn.) broke a 1-1 tie in the 60th minute to give the visiting University of New England Nor'easters a 2-1 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies Tuesday afternoon in the season-opening men's soccer match for both teams.

UNE's win broke a string of nine consecutive losses to Southern Maine, dating back to Sept. 9, 1999 when the Nor'easters played USM to a 1-1 draw.

Marks controlled a loose ball along the right end line and crossed the ball over USM junior goalkeeper David Kreps (Agawam, Mass.) into the far side of the net for the Nor'easters first lead in the match.

Southern Maine netted the first goal of the match in the 19th minute as senior Peter McHugh (Scarborough, Maine) played a ball through the UNE back line to junior Nick Johnson (South Portland, Maine).  Johnson took one touch and beat junior goalkeeper Jon Planer (Yarmouth, Maine) with a well-placed, low shot from 12 yards out.

The Nor'easters got the equalizer in the 38th minute, taking advantage of a miscue in the USM back.  Sophomore Owen Evans (West Stockbridge, Mass.) made the Huskies pay, touching the ball around a charging Kreps and slotting home an eight-yard shot.

Planer played a strong first half making four saves.  He finished the match with five saves.  Kreps was not credited with a save.  Southern Maine had an 11-6 edge in shots and an 8-2 margin in corner kicks.

The Huskies return to action this weekend when they travel to Norton, Mass., to play in the Wheaton College Classic on Saturday and Sunday.  The Huskies will take on host Wheaton on Saturday (12:00 p.m.) and Brandeis University on Sunday (2:00 p.m.).

The Nor'easters will travel to Maine Maritime Academy on Saturday (2:00 p.m.).
