WATERVILLE, Maine -- First-year pitchers Erin Lyons and Katie Knowlen allowed just one run over two games as the University of New England came away with a 6-1, 9-0 sweep of Thomas College in non-conference softball action Thursday afternoon.
The Nor'easters rode Lyons' pitching and the bat of senior Ashley DePasquale to victory in game one. Lyons surrendered four hits and one walk while striking out nine Terrier batters. DePasquale had three hits and two run batted in -- both coming on a double in the fifth.
Junior Lauren Webb added a pair of hits for UNE, which had a total of nine safeties in the victory.
The second game was shortened to five innings due to the eight-run rule. Knowlen scattered four hits and walked just one to earn her first collegiate shutout and raise her record to 2-0.
Offensively, senior Megan Gaedje contributed three singles and drove in three. Junior Caroline Engwer added a season-high three hits to go with two RBI, and Webb and junior Angie Damon had two hits apiece.
The Nor'easters, who upped their record to 17-8-1, pounded out 16 hits in the nightcap.
UNE plays a road doubleheader Saturday at Anna Maria College in Paxton, Mass. First pitch is slated for noon.
