BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England Nor'easters pounded out 20 hits and took advantage of 10 Gordon College errors for an 8-5, 11-3 sweep of the Fighting Scots in The Commonwealth Coast Conference softball action Tuesday at Claude Dubois Field.
The Nor'easters (10-2, 5-1 TCCC) took control right away in the opener, scoring five runs in the bottom of the second inning. Juniors Angie Damon (Scarborough, Maine) and Lauren Webb (Jericho, Vt.) each knocked in a run, and UNE scored the rest of its runs on three Gordon miscues.
Damon finished with two hits and three runs batted in, while Webb had two hits and two RBI. Senior Ashley DePasquale (Uxbridge, Mass.) added a pair of doubles and scored twice.
Senior Jess Silvio (Beverly, Mass.) worked the first four innings to pick up the win. Sophomore Amber Zablowksy (Rochester, Mass.) pitched three innings of two-hit ball to record the save.
The Fighting Scots' five runs came off the bat of senior Leah Granat (Long Valley, N.J.), who blasted a pair of home runs to center field.
UNE took the nightcap, thanks in large part to a 10-run third inning. The Nor'easters were recipients of five Gordon errors in the frame, which they parlayed into eight unearned runs. Webb and first-year Ashley Gott (Winterport, Maine) had run-producing hits.
Gott, senior Megan Gaedje (Tolland, Conn.) and first-year Marie Mantelli (Thompson, Conn.) had two hits apiece to pace the Nor'easters' 10-hit attack.
First-year pitcher Erin Lyons (Salem, N.H.) went the first four innings to up her record to 4-0. She allowed just two hits and struck out eight. The game was halted in the fifth inning due to the eight-run rule.
First-year Liz Cheeseman (Winslow, Maine) and senior Sara Giberson (Hingham, Mass.) each had an RBI for Gordon in the fifth inning,
UNE will look to continue its winning ways tomorrow when its hosts Salve Regina University in a doubleheader starting at 3:30 p.m.
The Fighting Scots (6-9, 0-6) are idle until Friday when they play a home twinbill with New England College.
