BIDDEFORD, Maine -- In The Commonwealth Coast Conference softball action Saturday afternoon at Claude Dubois Field, Curry College scored nine runs in its final two at-bats to break open a 3-2 game for a 12-2, six-inning victory and a split with the University of New England. The Nor'easters won the opening contest of the doubleheader, 13-5, in five innings.
UNE jumped on Curry right away in game one, scoring three times in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs and the bases loaded, junior
Jenn Waldecker (Hooksett, N.H.) cleared the bases with a double to the center field fence.
The Colonels answered back with two unearned runs in the top of the second before the Nor'easters plated six more runs in the bottom of the inning to gain a 9-2 advantage. With the bases loaded and one out, a single by junior
Lauren Webb (Jericho, Vt.) knocked in a pair of runs. Three batters later Waldecker ran her RBI total to six with a three-run blast to give the hosts a seven-run cushion.
First-year
Marie Mantelli (Thompson, Conn.) drove in three runs for the game, including two on a towering home run to left-center in the bottom of the fourth inning. Classmate
Maegen Johnson (Standish, Maine) and junior
Julie Monteiro (Portsmouth, R.I.) each collected two hits in the win.
UNE first-year starter
Erin Lyons (Salem, N.H.) improved to 3-0 on the season, surrendering just four hits in five innings of work. In her last two outings (10 innings), Lyons has allowed zero earned runs.
In game two, Curry (5-8, 2-2 TCCC) opened the scoring in the top of the third. The Colonels started things off with three consecutive hits and by the end of the inning had a 3-0 lead.
The Nor'easters tallied one run in both the third and fourth innings to reduce the deficit to 3-2. Senior
Megan Gaedje (Tolland Conn.) knocked in Johnson with a triple to right field in the third, and first-year
Liz Kelly (Hollis, N.H.) drove in the second UNE run in the fourth with a double down the right field line.
Curry scored three times in the top of the fifth inning to increase the lead to four (6-2). Two of the runs came off the bat of senior Alysia DiMuzio (Quincy, Mass.), whose homer to left scored classmate Kristen Jackman (Stoughton, Mass.).
The Colonels added six runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach. First-year Laikyn Nadolny (East Bridgewater, Mass.) drilled her third hit of the game over the left field fence to plate three runs and up the lead to 10-2. After an out and a DiMuzio single, senior Lauren Tobey (Lynn, Mass.) homered to center to conclude the scoring.
Tobey went 4-for-4 at the plate and had three RBI for the game. The quartet of Tobey, Jackman, Nadolny, and DiMuzio, combined for 12 of Curry's 15 hits, 11 of 12 RBI, and 9 of 12 runs scored.
Curry senior starter Ashley Ricciardi (Tewksbury, Mass.) pitched the first four innings to earn the victory and even her record at 2-2.
Johnson and Kelly had two hits apiece for the Nor'easters (8-2, 3-1 TCCC), who saw their eight-game win streak come to an end.
UNE's scheduled doubleheader Sunday with Salve Regina University has been postponed until Wednesday due to the impending rain. The Nor'easters will host Gordon College Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
The Colonels are back in action Tuesday against Anna Maria College.
