SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Hunter Thayer scored a pair of third-period goals to help the Skidmore College men's ice hockey team break open a close game, as the Thoroughbreds took a 5-2 win over the University of New England in the consolation game of the Skidmore College Invitational played Sunday at the Saratoga Springs City Rink.

Skidmore started quickly, scoring twice in the opening 7:44. Tim Daley got the hosts on the scoreboard just 45 seconds into the game, then Alex Radmin tallied a power-play goal to make the score 2-0.

Junior forward Jack Nolin broke Skidmore's run at 14:13 with a goal assisted by sophomore Ted Fabian.

The Thoroughbreds restored their two-goal margin when Joe Melnyk converted on the power play at 17:26.

Nolin would slice UNE's deficit in half just over a minute later when he notched an unassisted goal for his team-leading third tally of the season.

After a scoreless second frame, Thayer gave Skidmore a pair of insurance goals in the final period.

For the game, Skidmore (3-2) held a 41-19 advantage in shots on goal while making good on 2 of 6 extra-man opportunities. Goaltender John Bienkowski needed 17 stops to register the victory.

First-year netminder Dallas Ungurian registered 36 saves for the Nor'easters (0-5), who skate at Williams College this Friday (Dec. 4) at 7 p.m.
