Despite Wednesday's setback to WNEC, the Nor'easters clinched a spot in the upcoming TCCC Championship
Box Score
BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Western New England College scored all three of its goals in the first 23:42 to notch a comfortable 3-0 victory over the University of New England in The Commonwealth Coast Conference men's soccer action Wednesday.
For the third straight year, the Golden Bears (13-5-2, 10-2-1 TCCC) finished the regular season atop the conference standings. With the loss, the Nor'easters drop to 10-7 overall and 7-6 in league play.
Senior Jason Sabia (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) got the visitors on the board exactly eight minutes into the contest. Classmate Tony Rosa (Ludlow, Mass.) directed a corner kick to the near post, where Sabia flicked a header into the side netting at the far post.
Juniors and Ludlow, Mass. natives Alex Dos Santos and Justin Martins, each recorded goals midway through the first half to put WNEC ahead, 3-0. Dos Santos slipped one past the diving keeper in the 22nd minute, then Martins tallied his team-leading eighth goal of the season on a free kick from 20 yards that bounced just inside the near post 2:27 later.
Neither team had any real scoring chances the rest of the way, as steady rain made for a slick field.
The Golden Bears, who host UNE in a TCCC Quarterfinal match Saturday, received seven saves from senior Kyle Bak (Cumberland, R.I.).
Junior
Jon Planer (Yarmouth, Maine) made a pair of saves in 70+ minutes for the Nor'easters, before giving way to senior
Trevor Secord (Keene, N.H.).
With its 7-6 record in TCCC games, UNE finished in a tie for seventh with Curry College. The Nor'easters lost to the Colonels during the regular season, therefore making them the eight seed in the upcoming conference tournament. The pairings will be made official on Thursday.
