Nor'easters halt losing skid with 3-0 sweep of St. Joe's

Lindsey Cashell's nine kills and 15 digs helped the Nor'easters halt a four-match losing streak

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- First-year Lindsey Cashell (Merrimack, N.H.) had team highs of nine kills and 15 digs as the University of New England Nor'easters broke a four-match losing streak with a 25-22, 25-15, 25-22 win over St. Joseph's College in non-conference volleyball play Tuesday evening at the Campus Center.

The victory improves the Nor'easters' record to 9-15, while the Monks suffered their sixth loss in their last seven outings to fall to 14-16.

Junior Kristen Edwards (Laconia, N.H.) chipped in seven kills for the Nor'easters, who received 15 assists from senior setter Ellen Choinski (Saunderstown, R.I.). UNE had a total of 11 team blocks, including two solos and four assists by first-year Paige Curran (Chelmsford, Mass.).

First-year libero Kayla Sampson (Cumberland, Maine) played a strong match in the back row for the Nor'easters, registering 12 digs. Junior Angie Gust (Manitowoc, Wisc.) added three service aces.

The Monks received a match-best 10 kills from first-year Sarah Hawkes (Pownal, Maine), who added four blocks. Sophomore Samantha Varrell (Portsmouth, N.H.) recorded five kills.

St. Joe's attack was fueled by 25 assists from first-year setter Kiah Begley (Berwick, Maine). Begley and Varrell were also credited with 11 digs apiece.

UNE wraps up its regular season Saturday with a The Commonwealth Coast Conference tri-match versus Anna Maria College and host Gordon College.

Next up for the Monks is a home match with the University of Southern Maine on Thursday.
