Box Score
DUDLEY, Mass. -- Nichols College scored a pair of goals in the first 14:31 and then held on in the second half for a 2-1 The Commonwealth Coast Conference victory over the University of New England in women's soccer action Saturday afternoon.
The loss snapped a nine-game win streak for the Nor'easters, who fall to 13-2 on the season (10-2 TCCC). The Bison won for the fifth straight outing, improving to 9-8 overall and 6-6 in conference play.
Nichols struck just 31 seconds into the match, when sophomore Chelsea Shaughnessy (Halifax, Mass.) scored off a pass from first-year Samantha Abro (Northborough, Mass.). The goal ended a stretch of over 350 minutes that the UNE defense had held opponents scoreless.
The hosts doubled their lead exactly 14 minutes later when Shaughnessy setup Abro for the rookie's 21st goal of the season.
Trailing 2-0 in the 76th minute, first-year
Karina Scavo (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) cut the UNE deficit in half with her fifth goal of the season.
The Nor'easters continued to pressure the Nichols goal -- finishing the second frame with an 8-1 advantage in shots -- but could not find the equalizer in the final minutes.
Junior Nicole Johnson (Westhampton, Mass.) made eight saves for the Bison, who play Tuesday at Colby-Sawyer College.
UNE, which hosts Western New England College Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in the regular season finale, received two saves from senior goalie
Leigh Engel (Richmondville, N.Y.).
