Bates recovers to take 3-1 volleyball win over UNE

Junior Kristen Edwards racked up 18 kills in a 3-1 loss to Bates on Friday evening

LEWISTON, Maine -- Host Bates College overcame an early 1-0 deficit in a 3-1 victory over the University of New England in opening-day play of the Bates College Invitational on Friday evening. Set scores were 23-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-17.

Trailing 20-15 in set one, the Nor'easters rallied to establish an early lead in the match. The hosts recovered to take three straight frames to improve their record to 13-7.

Senior Liz Leberman and sophomore Olivia Schow combined for 25 kills to pace the Bobcats. Sophomore Grace Haessler was credited with 44 assists.

Junior Kristen Edwards put down 18 kills to lead the way for UNE (8-13). Senior co-captain Ellen Choinski set-up the attack with 30 assists. First-year Jackie Stone had a strong evening at the service line, registering five aces.

Defensively, junior Abby Davis and first-year Kayla Sampson chipped in 13 digs apiece, while Choinski and Stone each added 12.

The Nor'easters will wrap-up play tomorrow when they take on Maine Maritime Academy at 10 a.m. and Johnson and Wales University at 12:30 p.m.
