Box Score

BOSTON, Mass. -- First-year Karina Scavo (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) scored an unassisted goal with 12:11 left in a scoreless game and the University of New England held on in the final minutes for a 1-0 The Commonwealth Coast Conference victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology in women's soccer action Saturday afternoon at Sweeney Field.

Scavo collected a ball misplayed by the Leopard defense in the box and fired her fourth goal of the season into the open net for the game's lone goal.

The Nor'easters just missed taking the lead moments earlier, as a shot by senior Ali Trafton (Manchester, Maine) caromed off the far post and out.

Wentworth had its chance to even things up in the 85th minute when first-year Elizabeth Somma nailed the crossbar with a shot, but neither that attempt or the rebound that followed could be converted.

After an evenly played opening period, the Nor'easters amassed a 15-6 advantage in shots during the second frame.

Senior Leigh Engel (Richmondville, N.Y.) recorded four saves to earn the shutout for UNE (12-1, 9-1 TCCC), which won for its eighth consecutive outing.

First-year Jess Gardner (Wilbraham, Mass.) made seven saves in goal for the Leopards, who lost for only the second time in the last eight meetings between the two teams and dropped to 5-10 overall, 4-6 in conference play.

The Nor'easters will put their winning streak on the line Tuesday when they host reigning TCCC champion Roger Williams University for a 4 p.m. match. Wentworth is back in action the same day at Colby-Sawyer College.
