BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Western New England College recovered from a 25-9 drubbing in the first set to take a 3-1 victory over the University of New England in the final contest of a The Commonwealth Coast Conference tri-match Saturday at the Campus Center.
WNEC rallied to win the final three sets by the scores of 25-20, 25-10, 25-20.
Senior Rachel Cervone (West Springfield, Mass.) led the way for the winners with 12 kills and 22 digs. Junior Samantha Shomo (Glen Gardner, N.J.) registered five of her six kills in the fourth frame. Classmate Lauren Landri (New Canaan, Conn.) added five kills and four total blocks.
The Golden Bears received strong defensive efforts from junior Marci Egbert (Wayne, N.J.) and Shomo, who combined for 35 digs. Junior setter Katharina Boes (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) was credited with 36 assists.

Claire Varner (Breckenridge, Mich.) and first-year
Lindsey Cashell (Merrimack, N.H.) had nine kills apiece to pace the UNE attack. Junior
Kristen Edwards (Laconia, N.H.) had eight.

Ellen Choinski (Saunderstown, R.I.) added 14 to go with 32 assists. At the net, first-year
Paige Curran (Chelmsford, Mass.) was a force with five total blocks.
The Golden Bears (20-8, 5-1 TCCC) will take a four-game win streak into their next match, a key home tilt versus Colby-Sawyer College on Tuesday. Start time is 7 p.m.
UNE (8-12, 4-4) returns to play next Friday and Saturday at the Bates College Invitational.
