Varner powers Nor'easters past Salve Regina

Senior Claire Varner posted her third double-double to lead UNE to a 3-1 TCCC win over Salve Regina

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- University of New England senior co-captain Claire Varner (Breckenridge, Mich.) had a match-high 16 kills to go with 13 digs as the University of England defeated Salve Regina University, 3-1, in The Commonwealth Coast Conference volleyball action Saturday at the Campus Center. 

The Nor'easters (8-11, 4-3 TCCC) won with set scores of 21-25, 25-18, 25-23, 25-20.

Varner hit .429 for the match with just one error on 35 total attempts. 

Two other players reached double digits kill for UNE. Junior Kristen Edwards (Laconia, N.H.) chipped in with 12, while first-year Paige Curran (Chelmsford, Mass.) added 10 and a match-high six total blocks.

Defensively, the Nor'easters received 12 digs apiece from junior Angie Gust (Manitowoc, Wisc.), first-year Jackie Stone (Saginaw, Mich.) and senior Ellen Choinski (Saunderstown, R.I.), who also dished out 40 assists.

Senior Deanna Salter (Westwood, Mass.) and junior Lisa Zabel (Madison, Conn.) each registered 12 kills to lead the way for the Seahawks (8-15, 4-2). Sophomore Julianne Barry (Randolph, Mass.) contributed nine kills and four solo blocks.

Sophomore setter Jessica Meyer (Seymour, Conn.) was credited with 22 assists, and first-year libero Megan Clancy (Chelmsford, Mass.) dug out a match-best 31 balls.
