NEW LONDON, N.H. - Sophomore Maggie Mahoney scored with just under five minutes to play in the first half as the University of New England blanked Colby-Sawyer College, 1-0, in The Commonwealth Coast Conference women's soccer action Thursday afternoon.
The win is the Nor'easters' seventh straight, raising their record to 11-1 overall and 8-1 in conference play. Colby-Sawyer, which dropped its fourth consecutive meeting between the two teams, now stands at 7-4-3 (4-3-2 TCCC).
Senior Ali Trafton set-up Mahoney's goal, playing a through ball that Mahoney collected, took a few touches and drilled a shot past Colby-Sawyer keeper Allie Piper, who had come off her line line to challenge Mahoney.
The host Chargers created several scoring opportunities for themselves in the second frame, but were unable to net the equalizer. Their best chance came in the 81st minute when first-year Laurel Bauer broke free down the right flank and fired a shot on net. UNE senior goalkeeper Leigh Engel came up with a diving stop to preserve the shutout.
The match was tightly-contested the entire afternoon. Colby-Sawyer held a slight lead in shots (13-12), while UNE owned a small advantage in corner kicks (3-2).
Engel came up with five saves for her 11th career shutout. Piper was credited with three stops.
