LEWISTON, Maine -- Val Beckwith and Lauren Yanofsky combined for 36 points, 19 rebounds and nine assists as the Bates College women's basketball team defeated the University of New England, 83-61, Tuesday night at Alumni Gymnasium.
Bates raised its record to 9-3 on the season, while the Nor'easters fell to 6-5.
Beckwith scored a game-high 19 points, shooting 8-13 from the field, and grabbed nine rebounds and dished out four assists. Yanofsky submitted a 17-point, 10-rebound, 5-assist performance to help pace the Bobcats, while first-year Annie Burns scored 10 points to go with eight assists and three steals.
First-year Kelley Paradis led the Nor'easters with 16 points. Senior Alli Gamache added 14 points and four assists, and first-year Margo Russell posted a double-double with13 points and 11 rebounds.
Bates broke out of a 8-8 tie with a 10-2 run, starting with a layup by Christine McCall and featuring three-pointers by Burns and Maggie DePoy, putting them in the lead for good. An 18-4 run later in the half extended the lead to 21 points, at 38-17 with 3:25 left, but UNE closed out the half with a 13-2 run of its own, featuring 6 points by Russell and a three by Paradis, to cut the lead to 40-30 at intermission.
Another three by Paradis and a layup by Carrie Bunnell cut the lead further to 7 early in the second half, before Bates regrouped for a 9-0 run, fueled by 6 points from Yanofsky, to put the game nearly out of reach at 55-39 with 15:37 left. UNE clawed back to within 12 but would get no closer.
Bates shot 50 percent from the field while holding UNE to 32.8% shooting. The Bobcats outmuscled the Nor'easters on the boards 51-32 and dished out 25 assists out of 33 field goals. Bates outscored UNE 31-11 in points off the bench and 40-24 in points in the paint.
Bates will play host to Bowdoin on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in a non-conference matchup; UNE will host Thomas College Thursday at 6 p.m.
