Jefferson torches nets as Nor'easters win 13th straight

PAXTON, Mass. -- Senior Johnnie Jefferson poured in a season-high 37 points and grabbed nine boards to lead the University of New England past Anna Maria College, 83-61, in The Commonwealth Coast Conference men's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Fuller Activities Center.

The win runs the Nor'easters' winning streak to 13 games, while upping their overall record to 14-3.  UNE stands alone atop the TCCC standings with an unblemished 5-0 mark.  Anna Maria drops to 4-13 overall, 1-4 in conference play.

With his team leading by one (21-20), Jefferson reeled off nine points during a four-minute stretch to help UNE build a 12-point advantage (38-26).  A three-pointer by Matt Thompson (Plymouth, N.H.) gave the visitors a 52-33 cushion heading into halftime.

UNE made 9 of 12 shots from beyond the arc in the first frame, while Anna Maria misfired on all seven of its attempts.

The AMCATS would get as close as 11 (62-51) in the second half, but UNE closed the contest on a 14-3 run to cruise to victory.

Jefferson shot a spectacular 15-for-19 from the floor, including a 4-of-7 performance from three-point land. 

First-year Quentin Thompson (Austin, Texas) added 10 points, seven boards, three assists, and two steals for UNE, while senior Jaykyri Simpson (East Cleburne, Texas.) contribted nine boards, seven assists, and three steals.

Brad Peterson paced the AMCATS with a team-high 18 points while grabbing six rebounds. Derek Johnson contributed 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds, while sophomore Tyler Washington had a nice all-around game with 10 points, six boards, four assists, and three steals.
