Gamache, Bunnell lead UNE to first-ever road win at Salve

NEWPORT, R.I. -- Senior Alli Gamache (Dudley, Mass.) and sophomore Carrie Bunnell (Barnet, Vt.) each scored 19 points to power the University of New England to a 67-49 victory over Salve Regina University in The Commonwealth Coast Conference women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Rodgers Recreation Center.

Winners of four straight, the Nor'easters (10-5, 3-0 TCCC) seized control right from the start, opening the contest with a 14-2 run over the first 10 minutes.  Gamache drained her first three shots from the field, including two from long distance, to contribute eight points during the stretch.

UNE extended its lead to 13 (22-9) at the 4:45 mark before the Seahawks were able to narrow the margin to 28-21 at the break.  The hosts were fortunate to only be down by seven points at intermission, as they shot just 23.5 percent (8-for-34) from the floor in the first frame.

Salve began the second half with a 9-2 spurt to even the score at 30-30 with 17:25 remaining.  After exchanging baskets, the Nor'easters regained the lead and steadily increased it the rest of the way.

The Nor'easters shot 45.2 percent (14-for-31) from the field the second half and out-rebounded their opponents 24-15 in the period to win going away.  UNE never trailed during the game.

Gamache canned five 3-pointers for the game, and dished out a team-high four assists.  Bunnell made 7 of 12 shot attempts while collecting six boards.  Senior Sara Pelkey (Barre, Vt.) added eight points and pulled down a season-high 13 rebounds.

The Seahawks (9-5, 2-1 TCCC) were led by Lindsay Shorey (Ashland, Mass.) with 15 points.  Allegra Lovoy (Charlestown, R.I.) recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 caroms.  Salve next plays on Wednesday against conference foe Nichols College.

The Nor'easters, who took their first-ever road with at Salve Regina, will look for their fifth victory in-a-row the same day when Eastern Nazarene College comes to Biddeford for a TCCC contest beginning at 6:00 p.m.  The game will be Web cast live at http://athletics.une.edu/stream.asx
