Bunnell stars as Nor'easters get by Curry, 81-65

MILTON, Mass. -- University of New England sophomore guard Carrie Bunnell (Barnet, Vt.) poured in a career-high 25 points -- including eight during a 19-0 second-half run -- to lead the Nor'easters to an 81-65 The Commonwealth Coast Conference victory over the Curry College Colonels on Tuesday evening at Miller Gymnasium.

Bunnell was 7-for-10 from the floor and 11-for-13 from the free throw line on her way to the high scoring output of her career.  She made all five of her attempts from the floor in the first half and scored 13 points.

UNE (9-5, 2-0 TCCC) never trailed in the contest.  The Nor'easters led 35-30 at the break despite turning the ball over 14 times in the frame.  UNE made 46.2 percent (12 of 26) of its field goal attempts in building its five-point advantage.

The Colonels chipped away at their deficit early in the second half and tied the contest at 39-all on a lay-up by Heather King with 16:27 remaining.  From there, the Nor'easters held Curry scoreless over the next 6:43 while reeling off 19 consecutive points.  Bunnell recorded eight points during that game-deciding stretch.

First-year guard Kelley Paradis (Newport, Maine) contributed 13 points, seven rebounds and five steals for the Nor'easters.  Senior point guard Alli Gamache (Dudley, Mass.) scored 12 points to go with three assists.

The Nor'easters shot a sizzling 57.1 percent (12 of 21) from the field in the second half and were 29 of 37 (78.4 percent) at the free throw line for the game.

King had a team-high 14 points for Curry (2-10, 0-2), while Danyel Cousins added 10 points and six boards.

UNE heads to Newport, R.I. on Saturday for a key TCCC tilt at Salve Regina University.  Game time is 1:00 p.m.
