Nor'easters rally to stay perfect in TCCC play

Reigning TCCC Player of the Week Ellen Choinski had 41 assists as UNE moved to 6-0 in conference play

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Trailing two sets to one, the University of New England volleyball team rallied to remain unbeaten in The Commonwealth Coast Conference play with a 3-2 victory over Salve Regina University on Tuesday evening.  

The win was the seventh straight for the Nor'easters, who improved to 6-0 in TCCC play and 8-6 overall.  The Seahawks now stand at 7-7 overall, 2-4 in conference matches.

UNE won the first set, 25-18, but Salve responded by taking sets two and three (25-23, 25-17).  The Nor'easters regained their momentum in the fourth set (25-15) and finished things off, 15-12, in the finale.

Senior Alex Toregas (Chevy Chase, Md.) had a match-high 17 kills to lead the way for UNE.  Junior Claire Varner (Breckenridge, Mich.) posted a double-double with 10 kills and a match-best 25 digs.  Sophomore Kristen Edwards (Laconia, N.H.) added nine kills and five total blocks, while junior Ellen Choinski (Saunderstown, R.I.) dished out 41 assists.  Defensively, senior Josie Raphaelito (Pine Hill, N.M.) contributed 22 digs.

The Seahawks received 15 kills apiece from junior Deanna Salter (Westwood, Mass.) and first-year Julianne Barry (Randolph, Mass.).  Senior Rachael Cirella (Jamestown, R.I.) was credited with 22 assists and 12 digs, and junior Natalie Rubenoff (New Hartford, Conn.) served up a match-high five aces.

UNE returns to play Friday and Saturday at the Maine Mid-Coast Classic, co-hosted by Bates College and Bowdoin College.  Salve Regina plays a non-conference match Saturday at Coast Guard Academy.
