Alex Toregas had a match-high 17 kills to help the Nor'easters rally past Roger Williams
BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Trailing two sets to one, the University of New England volleyball team rallied for a 3-2 The Commonwealth Coast Conference victory over Roger Williams University on Saturday afternoon at the Campus Center.
The win was the third in a row for the Nor'easters (4-6, 2-0 TCCC), who avenged a 3-0 loss to the Hawks earlier in the season. Roger Williams lost its third straight to slip to 8-5 overall, 1-2 in conference play.
After dropping the first set 25-20, the Hawks took the next two (25-14, 25-15) and seemed to be in control. UNE rallied behind the setting of junior
Ellen Choinski (Saunderstown, R.I.) and front-line play of senior
Alex Toregas (Chevy Chase, Md.) to surge back.
The Nor'easters won set four by a score of 25-20 and led in the deciding set, 12-6, before Roger Williams recovered to tie the score at 12. UNE came up with the next three points to take victory.
Toregas finished with a match-high 17 kills and four services aces. Choinski had 18 assists--all coming in the final three sets--and five total blocks.
The Nor'easters also got a strong performance from junior
Claire Varner (Breckenridge, Mich.), who contributed nine kills and 13 digs. Defensively, UNE was led by senior
Josie Raphaelito (Pine Hill, N.M.) with 20 digs and sophomore
Chelsea Boyle (Cumberland, R.I.) with 16.
Roger Williams junior Erica DoVale (Hope, R.I.) posted a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs. Sophomore Rebekah Dion (Old Saybrook, Conn.) commited just one attack error en route to a team-high 11 kills. Sophomore Brittney Sullivan (Nashua, N.H.) pitched in with eight kills and 11 digs.
Senior setter Kirsten Bosworth (Centerville, Mass.) handed out 31 assists to lead the Hawks, while sophomore Jill Hurd (Sunapee, N.H.) dug out a team-high 15 balls.
The Nor'easters will look to make it four straight Wednesday (Sept. 24) when they head to Quincy, Mass. for a TCCC match with Eastern Nazarene College (6:00 p.m.). Roger Williams will look to halt its three-game skid when it travels to Regis College that same evening for a 7:00 p.m. match.
