BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The Nichols College Bison and University of New England Nor'easters played to a 2-2 draw in The Commonwealth Coast Conference men's soccer action Saturday afternoon.
UNE opened the scoring in the 11th minute when first-year
Eric Goldberg (Colorado Springs, Colo.) found classmate
Dan Crear (North Attleboro, Mass.), who deposited a shot into the upper left-hand corner of the net for his first collegiate goal.
Nichols was able to tie the score seven minutes later when senior captain Aaron Kelly (Dover Plains, N.Y.) converted from five yards out.
The Bison went on to take a 2-1 advantage just 2:45 into the second frame. First-year forward David Johnson (Canterbury, Conn.) netted a shot from 10 yards out on the right side to register his team-leading fourth goal.
First-year striker
Owen Evans (West Stockbridge, Mass.) drew UNE even three minutes later on a long-distance shot from 30 yards that found its way into the top right portion of the goal.
Neither team was able to break the tie over the rest of regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods. Each squad took 10 shots for the contest, and Nichols held an 8-2 lead in corner kicks.
First-year Brendan Hamilton (North Attleboro, Mass.) had four saves for the Bison (3-2-1, 0-1-1 TCCC), who host Western New England College on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.
Junior
Derek Poulin (Scarborough, Maine) made one stop for the Nor'easters (1-2-2, 0-1-1), but it was a big one. He came off his line to stop junior Beyan Kamara (Webster, Mass.), who had broken in behind the Nor'easters' defense with seven minutes to go in the second overtime.
UNE will face Colby-Sawyer College for a home contest Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.
