UNE recovers from slow start to overtake St. Joe's

STANDISH, Maine -- The University of New England volleyball team dropped the first set but recovered to go on to a 3-1 victory over St. Joseph's College in a non-conference volleyball match played Thursday evening at the Harold Alfond Athletics Center.

Winners of two straight, the Nor'easters improve to 3-6 overall, while the Monks lost for the fifth time in their last six outings to fall to 3-11.

UNE dropped the first set, 25-19, before roaring back to take the second set by the score of 25-8.  The Nor'easters finished off the victory by taking games three and four (25-21, 25-15).

Alex Toregas recorded a match-high 13 kills to pace the winners.  Claire Varner pitched in with seven kills and a season-high 13 digs, while Meghan Flynn added seven kills and four service aces.  Setter Josie Raphaelito got the offense going with 35 assists.  Defensively, Ellen Choinski led the way with 17 digs.

Kate Boccanelli had 10 kills for the Monks.

After playing their first nine matches on the road, the Nor'easters open their 2008 home schedule Saturday when they host Roger Williams University in a key early-season The Commonwealth Coast Conference tilt.  Start time at the Campus Center is 1:00 p.m.
