BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England Nor'easters got goals from five different players to open their season with a 5-1 non-conference victory over the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners in college women's soccer action Saturday afternoon.

UNE found the scoring column early when sophomore midfielder Kristin Meza (San Diego, Calif.) tallied in the fourth minute.

The Nor'easters doubled their lead less than eight minutes later when junior midfielder Sam Reid (Middleton, Mass.) scooped up a loose ball and deposited it in the back of the net.

After Maine Maritime sophomore Katie Hutchinson (Dixfield, Maine) cut the Mariners' deficit in half on a free kick in the 24th minute, first-year forward Katie Caron (Winslow, Maine) gave the hosts a 3-1 advantage just before the half.

UNE received second-half goals from junior striker Ali Trafton (Manchester, Maine) and first-year striker Sarah Richardson (Rochester, N.H.) to complete its scoring.

The Nor'easters (1-0) held a 23-2 advantage in shots and 5-0 margin in corner kicks.  They are idle until Sept. 10 when they host the University of Southern Maine.

Sophomore goalkeeper Lacey Jackson (York, Pa.) made seven stops for the Mariners, who play host to the University of Maine Machias Wednesday at 5:00 p.m.
