Senior Alex Toregas totaled 26 kills in three matches to earn all-tourney accolades
WENHAM, Mass. -- The University of New England volleyball team suffered three losses at the Gordon College Invitational on Saturday. UNE lost to Endicott College (3-0), Wheaton College (3-0) and the host Fighting Scots (3-1).
Endicott dominated the Nor'easters in the opening match, taking a 25-14, 25-17, 25-11 decision. Senior
Josie Raphaelito (Pine Hill, N.M.) led the way for UNE, recording five kills. Classmate
Alex Toregas (Chevy Chase, Md.) contributed three kills and three blocks.
Wheaton claimed a 25-23, 25-21, 25-19 win in the Nor'easters' middle match of the day. Toregas led the attack with 10 kills, while junior
Ellen Choinski (Saunderstown, R.I.) had five to go with 10 assists. Defensively,
Angie Gust (Manitowoc, Wisc.) dug out nine balls.
Gordon overcame a slow start to take down the Nor'easters in four games (21-25, 25-16, 25-19, 25-11). Toregas paced UNE with 13 kills and four blocks. Choinski played a fine all-around match with six kills, six digs and nine assists. Gust reached double-digits in digs with 10.
Toregas was an all-tournament selection for the Nor'easters, who take part in the Roger Williams University Invitational next Saturday.
