BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Junior Rachel Cervone (West Springfield, Mass.) had 15 kills--seven in the first set--to lead sixth-seeded Western New England College to a 3-0 sweep of third-seeded University of New England in a quarterfinal round match of The Commonwealth Coast Conference volleyball tournament played Tuesday evening at the Campus Center.

The Golden Bears (17-16) used set scores of 25-23, 25-20, 25-19 to avenge a 3-1 setback to the Nor'easters on Sept. 27.  WNEC advances to Thursday's semifinal and will face No. 2 Colby-Sawyer College, a straight-set winner over Salve Regina University.  Start time in New London, N.H. is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

UNE fell to 17-14 and will hear about a possible bid to the ECAC Tournament next Monday (Nov. 10).

Behind Cervone, a first team all-conference selection, the Golden Bears were able to establish control early.  UNE battled back to tie the set at 23-all, but WNEC won the last two points to take a one-set lead.  The Golden Bears led all the way in set two and controlled play for much of set three.

Second team all-conference choice Katharina Boes (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) played a strong match, recording 24 assists, 13 digs and six service aces.  Sophomore Samantha Shomo (Glen Gardner, N.J.) chipped in with a team-high 14 digs to go with six kills.

Junior Claire Varner (Breckenridge, Mich.) and sophomore Kristen Edwards (Laconia, N.H.) had eight kills apiece to pace the Nor'easters.

The Golden Bears played strong defense, limiting UNE first team all-conference selection Alex Toregas (Chevy Chase, Md.) to just six kills in 24 total attacks.  Toregas did have three solo blocks and one ace to account for 10 points.

The Nor'easters received 18 assists from junior Ellen Choinski (Saunderstown, R.I.) and match-high 15 digs from sophomore Chelsea Boyle (Cumberland, R.I.).

UNE committed nine serve-receive errors and hit just .072 for the night.
