Bowdoin holds strong in second half for 63-49 win

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Junior center Mark Phillips (Ashland, Mass.) had 13 points and eight rebounds, and the Bowdoin College Polar Bears closed with a 13-4 run over the final 3:49 for a 63-49 men's basketball victory over the University of New England Nor'easters on Tuesday evening at the Campus Center.

Bowdoin, which never trailed in the contest, took a 48-37 lead on a three-pointer by junior guard Mike Hauser (East Williston, N.Y.) with 7:28 remaining and appeared to be pulling away.  

UNE answered with an 8-2 spurt over the next 3:41 to close within five (50-45).  Senior forward Johnnie Jefferson (Dallas, Texas) had five points and sophomore guard Chas Rentrope knocked down a trey from the top of the circle to close the run.

The Polar Bears then salted the game away by scoring nine unanswered points.  Senior guard Kyle Jackson (Acton, Mass.) had five of Bowdoin's nine points during that time.

The six-foot-eight Phillips made 5 of 8 attempts from the floor and also handed out three assists.  Reserve first-year forward Will Hanley (New Canaan, Conn.) scored 10 points and grabbed five caroms.  Jackson finished with nine points and snared eight rebounds.  Hauser added six boards and five assists for Bowdoin, which utilized its height advantage to control the boards (43-35).

Jefferson earned game-high scoring honors with 16 points, including four shots from beyond the arc.  He also chipped in with seven rebounds.  

The Nor'easters had a tough shooting night, making 19 of 61 attempts (31.1 percent) overall and just 8 of 37 (21.6 percent) three-point attempts.  

Next up for Bowdoin in a home game versus Kean University of New Jersey on Sunday (Nov. 30) at 1:00 p.m.  The Nor'easters are idle until Monday (Dec. 1) when they host Colby College at 7:30 p.m.
