BOSTON, Mass. -- Junior guard
Marchale Robinson scored 20 points off the bench to lead six University of New England players in double figures, and the Nor'easters held on for a 91-90 victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology Thursday evening at Tansey Gymnasium.
Trailing by eight (84-76) with one minute to play, Wentworth rallied and closed to within one (91-90) on a three-point play by Shane West with one second remaining.
Robinson tallied 11 points in the final 7:53 to help the Nor'easters to victory. He was 9 of 13 from the free throw line, including 6 of 8 over the last 1:13 of the contest.
First-year guard
Quentin Thompson contributed 16 points in just 17 minutes of playing time. He made three 3-point field goals and added a pair of steals.
The Nor'easters also received 13 points apiece from senior forward
Johnnie Jefferson and sophomore guard #J.J. Roseman#, 12 from senior guard
Jaykyri Simpson and 10 by first-year guard
Victor Oruonyehu. Simpson had all of his 12 points in the second half and finished with six assists.
Senior guard Todd Doyle poured in a game-high 26 points to lead Wentworth, while six-foot-six forward Matt Abbott controlled play inside with 21 points and 16 rebounds.
The Nor'easters fell behind by five points early but quickly recovered and took a 31-19 lead on a three-pointer by
Ryan Knotek with 5:01 left in the first frame. Wentworth closed to within five (39-34), but a Robinson trey at the buzzer gave UNE an eight-point halftime cushion.
Leading 60-55 with nine minutes remaining, the Nor'easters went on a 11-4 run to assume a 12-point (71-59) advantage at the 6:18 mark.
For the game, Wentworth (1-3) held a commanding 46-18 points-in-the-paint margin. UNE was able to offset that by leading in bench scoring (36-14) and cashing in for 30 points at the free throw line.
UNE (1-1) plays its home-opener Saturday when Saint Joseph's College of Maine comes to the Campus Center for a 2:00 p.m. contest.
